1950's
In the mid-1950’s Sound Systems first made their appearance. Pioneering sounds, like V Rocket, featured one speaker box, usually made of local hard wood, with the Sounds name painted brightly on. The single, full range, speaker was driven by a small (10 to 20 watt) valve (aka Tube) amplifier. The DJ played 78’s on a single deck: see images of the actual V Rocket DJ’s. Of course beauty & Dance competitions helped bring in the crowds, who of course needed to buy Drink, eats & smokes….and as you can see from the photos dress code was sharp!
Some of the local shops that sold 78’s also offered repair services to the growing Sound System scene
